The Last Of The Human Troubadours Album Launch: A rare meeting of soulful songwriting and cinematic strings.
Jackie Marshall launches her fifth album The Last Of The Human Troubadours live on stage, joined by Chris Pickering and the hauntingly beautiful Black Square Quartet, with arrangements by Robert Davidson.
The program moves between original songs and unexpected companions, from an obscure Joni Mitchell cover and an Irish/Scottish traditional to the 2000-year-old Seikilos Epitaph.
Marshall’s writing is direct and disarming, tracing a path through uncertain times with warmth, humour and clear-eyed honesty.
Black Square Quartet is a fresh, boundary-pushing string ensemble focused on contemporary Australian work, bringing a vivid, modern edge to classical music.
The pairing of Black Square Quartet with Jackie Marshall is a meeting of soulful virtuosity delivered with intention.
With their finely detailed arrangements, this collaboration carries a quiet intensity and clarity through each song. Thoughtful, grounded and deeply felt.

About the Artists
Jackie Marshall
Jackie Marshall is many things: an inveterate creative, multi-artform explorer, and “that rare thing: an Aussie original” (Weekend Australian). But she might describe herself as many other things too: mother, mystic, restless spirit, moon-gazer, forest-lover, survivor, spontaneous adventurist, heart-centred anarchist, and eternal optimist. With her unrestrained spirit and immense talents, this Wiradjuri-born Magandjin-based artist shines as an acclaimed singer, musician, songwriter, poet, illustrator and actor.
Chris Pickering
Chris Pickering is a songwriter, composer, academic and musician based in Naarm/Melbourne, Australia. He was born and raised on Githabul Country in south-east Queensland, and learned to play guitar, drums, bass, and piano alongside writing songs and playing in bands. From 2009-2013 he moved to Nashville and Memphis, Tennessee, USA, where he wrote songs on Music Row and performed and toured as an independent artist. He has released four full-length albums of original material, and composed many works that bridge the worlds of popular and art music.
Black Square Quartet
Black Square Quartet was founded in 2018. Inspired by the iconic and controversial artwork The Black Square by Kasimir Malevich, one of the first true examples of artistic minimalism, the quartet aims to challenge and inspire audiences with unique and innovative repertoire choices. Strong advocates of new & Australian music, the quartet has premiered works by composers including Thomas Green, Ken Thomson, Cathy Likhuta, Marike Van Dijk, Brenda Gifford, Richard Grantham, and Philip Eames. They have collaborated with some of Australia’s finest musicians and ensembles, including Trichotomy, Shugorei, Sarah Curro, Aaron Brown, Steve Newcomb, and various others.
