Dawn Awakening

Dawn Awakening

September 11, 2016 5:00 am - 6:15 am

A ceremonial celebration of the awakening of a new dawn; the stories of our first nation peoples and their spiritual ancestors told through music, dance and spoken word.

A traditional meeting place for our aboriginal ancestors, Stumers Creek (Coolum Beach) will play centre stage for the Dawn Awakening ceremony on Sunday 11 September 2016.

Dawn Awakening is the closing celebration of the new Horizon festival – a 10-day event staged throughout the Sunshine Coast region featuring thought-provoking talks, engaging sculpture, art competitions, workshops, design technology, culinary delights, visual art and music.

Storytelling is central to the Dawn Awakening - a highlight being the narration of the Coolum Dreamtime by Gubbi Gubbi elder – Lyndon Davis.  There will also be dance and music performances featuring didgeridoo, the Gubbi Gubbi Dance Troupe, renowned cellist Louise King, Torres Strait Island Elder Uncle Milton Walit and musician Alister Bartholemew, Coolum State School’s Groovy Girls & the Beat Boys, CoolHearts community choir and the Sensory Circus Tribe

Whilst the 5am commencement might be a little daunting for some, there is the promise of a bush tucker breakfast and strong coffee for purchase on arrival, and after the performance.  Patrons are encouraged to bring a torch and chair/beach mat. Parking is limited, so carpooling or group walk to the site where possible is advised.
